![]() ![]() The true game that captures the heart and soul of Squid Game is Super Mario Party - or any other Mario Party game, for that matter. The real squid game isn’t Apex Legends, Fortnite, or any other battle royale game. However, I’m here today to defend a different thesis. It’s only natural then, that writers would compare a battle royale show to video games. Since PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds became popular, seemingly every major games company has entered the fray, offering their take on the last-man-standing format with Fortnite standing at the top of them all. But for fans of battle royale games, the concept behind the show is nothing new. ![]() Fans have lauded the slasher’s anti-capitalist message and its bold, thrilling visuals. ![]() ![]() The series follows Seong Gi-Hun, a gambler who’s down on his luck and decides to compete in a series of life or death children’s games where the last person standing gets a big fat bag of cash. Whether you’ve seen the show itself, memes inspired by it, or the Roblox versions of it - the Korean thriller quickly took over our screens to become one of the most popular shows of the year. For many, this will be the game they have waited years for.If you have been paying any attention to what’s on TV in the past month or two, you’ve probably heard of Netflix’s runaway success, Squid Game. This is a Mario Party where Stars cost 20 coins again. A Mario Party that's stripped back and that doesn't have to rely on gimmicks is a good reminder of what made the franchise so popular in the first place. Then again, maybe a safe Mario Party is exactly what we needed. Perhaps that feeling could have been offset slightly if the package was a little more generous by including a couple more classic boards and characters. It doesn't take risks and avoids trying to advance the franchise in a meaningful way. What's included is great fun, but there's not much that's imaginative or surprising. If there is a slight drawback with Mario Party Superstars, it's that the game plays it considerably safe. By comparison, Super Mario Party can boast 2 vs 2, co-operative, and rhythm-based modes, plus more. This is a game that is likely to be most appreciated by longtime fans.Īlso worth noting is the fact that Mario Party Superstars doesn't offer alternative ways to play beyond the board game and minigame modes. You're even asked to name your favourite Mario Party game and minigames when you set up your profile card. Outside of the game modes, you can unlock music tracks from past games and collect short encyclopedia entries looking back at the history of the series. Chance Time spaces make their return, throwing in the possibility of more randomness for good measure, while the absence of Super Mario Party's character dice blocks means strategies are mostly based on which items you pick up and how you use them. The game leans closer to the Nintendo 64 releases in the way it plays, with the more interesting boards providing that little bit of extra unpredictability seasoned players will associate with the franchise. In fact, when you start a new game, Koopa Troopa briefly reminisces and gives a nod to the board's history. Meanwhile, all five of the colourful and vibrant boards here are borrowed from Mario Party 1-3, from Peach's Birthday Cake to Space Land. All 100 minigames are taken from the first ten core games in the series, with a particularly heavy emphasis on the earlier entries. The play on nostalgia couldn't be more obvious. ![]()
